The weekend before Christmas, Yuna and I escaped the cold Tokyo winter with a quick jaunt over to Guam.
This was a very welcome respite for me, having grown up in a place where t-shirts and shorts are pretty essential by Christmas time, I’m often found grumpily complaining about how Tokyo’s weather is “just not right” at this time of year.
It was a unique experience, as while we were clearly in an American territory (made most apparent by our customer service experiences compared to what we’re used to in Japan), it was hard to feel like we were that far away from home as it seemed like there were more Japanese tourists populating the streets than local residents.
We rented a car and had a few great swims at some secluded and pristine beaches, ate far too much delicious greasy Western food and Yuna had a very glamorous “first” with a trip to K-Mart! For some reason it was a tourist hotspot drawing huge crowds of Japanese, Chinese and Koreans, and I have to say I did have fun looking through the very American snack aisle (cake batter flavoured breakfast cereal!?).
I had my 500c/m over my shoulder for most of the trip, and as you can see we had pretty pristine tropical resort type weather while we were there.
It’s only about 3.5 hours from Tokyo to Guam and you can easily make a stress relieving long weekend trip out of it. Yuna wants to go back again soon, and while I got a bit frustrated after a dispute at the rentacar agency and the fact that our hotel could not find our room for us for approximately 6 hours, I think she could probably twist my arm.
