Last May, I debuted my latest project in Sydney at Artsite Galleries Camperdown. I’m happy to announce that I will also be showing the work next month in Shinjuku at Place M Galleries, from August 6th-12th.
The island of Aogashima is immediately distinctive for its unique geography: active concentric volcanic calderas.
Approximately 150 people live there, filling a variety of roles in the community from teachers, government workers, engineers, subsistence farmers and fishermen.
The sheer cliffs and the rough seas around the island make it impossible to keep boats in the port, so they are lifted to and from a dry dock every day by a huge crane.
The island is full of incredibly resilient people, and as part of this project I produced a documentary video full of interviews with local residents and aerial flyovers of the incredible landscape by drone.
You can see a trailer for this documentary below:
All images were shot on film, developed and printed by my hand.
If you would like to come and see the images or the documentary, Place M is open from 12:00-7:00pm every day of the week.
I will be there alongside the exhibition from August 6th-12th and am happy to talk about the work and answer any questions you might have.
If you’d like to share the show information with anyone, there are promotional flyers for Place M and the exhibition here and here.
You can see further images from the series in the gallery.
I hope to see you there!
